Newborn Crochet Cardigan

I procrastinated over this project for far too long, I could have finished it ten times over!

Does anyone else ever wonder if a project is ‘worth’ it? Making things for a baby sometimes seems a little pointless because they grow so quickly. For the effort, love, and care you put into a handmade item, do they get enough use out of it?

These thoughts kept floating around my mind, so even after I’d downloaded the pattern, chosen my wool, and prepared my crochet hook, I still didn’t start. Evidently, I did end up making my newborn a crochet sweater. What was it that changed my mind?

She’ll grow out of it so fast. In fact, at three weeks old, she may already be in her last week of wearing it. But you know what? That’s the point.

Her crochet sweater is now a treasured memento of exactly how tiny she was when we brought her home from hospital. She’ll never be that small again, but I’ll always have her sweater to remind me. When she has babies of her own, this is something I’ll be able to pass on to her and I think that’s lovely.

If you’d like to crochet a newborn sweater I highly recommend this free pattern by Sinead Deegan on Ravelry. It worked up so quickly and easily, even for a beginner like me.

Happy stitching,

{ Wren }
