Quick And Easy Crochet Basket

Seriously, this crochet project takes only a few hours and it looks and feels luxurious. I’m desperate to make it in allll the colours and allll the sizes. I’m addicted.

Quick and Easy Crochet Basket

If you’d like to make one, and you definitely should, pop on over to Darling Be Brave, where Megan has shared her free crochet basket pattern.

My basket is a little different to Megan’s. Perhaps it’s a tub instead? Using her concept, I made a larger basket, and left the handles off. I plan to put it (and several more), in my baby’s nursery as both a functional and decorative item.

I didn’t have any trouble with this pattern, but I did have to read it and re-read it a few times as I went because it just didn’t flow right in my mind. There were a couple of instances when I wondered if an instruction meant one thing or another… Before you start, I’d suggest reading and understanding the pattern and checking the pictures, so that you have a clear idea of the end goal. Also explore the comment section if there is something you’re not sure about.

Are you a complete beginner? Struggling with the pattern? No worries! Crochet Ever After has shared this detailed step-by-step YouTube video of how to make a slipknot, chain (ch), and half double crochet (hdc). Her explanation of half double crochet will really help you follow the pattern.

Super bulky wool is suggested for this basket, but I’m trying to bust my wool stash, so I used a ‘chiffon mousse’ wool with a recommended hook size 6-7mm. This wool is plush, very soft, and I wondered if the basket sides would hold up… To compensate, I used a smaller hook size than the pattern suggests – 7mm instead of 9mm. Living in rural Japan, and laid up on bed rest, I’m working with what I’ve got.

I was pleasantly surprised! My basket is soft, but definitely not ‘floppy’. You can see in the photos the sides hold up straight with no trouble. Conveniently, I can fold this basket and put in away in a cupboard if I need to.

Didn’t the basket look so sweet stuffed full of baby goodies! Wouldn’t it be a beautiful and thoughtful handmade baby shower gift? You could put in some small items from the baby registry, or how about make a set of nesting baskets in three sizes? I would check with the mum-to-be first though about her colour preferences – no need to make baskets in fluoro orange if her nursery theme is grey and olive… In fact, use this pattern for any gift basket. It would look stunning in a neutral colour and filled with wine, crackers, cheeses, and fruit. To my dear friends and family, you’re all receiving gift basket for the foreseeable future.

It was so satisfying how quickly and beautifully this project worked up. Make one, and before you know it you’ll be crocheting baskets for everything!

Happy crocheting,
